Mafia Wars 411 Starts Here
Mafia Wars is a multi-player browser game that works in conjunction with social media site platforms. Facebook, MySpace, Yahoo, and iPhone all have applications for people who want to play the game, and lots of people do! There are over 9 million players on Facebook alone as of April 2009. And there are 6 million active players.
What is the appeal of Mafia Wars? Well, the game pulls you in to regular play with a trifecta of addictive objectives:
1. Leveling Up
2. Building a crime family
3. Earning loads of money
There are lots of fun details along the way to spice up your game, but these 3 are at the core of your game experience. Let’s talk about these objectives in detail.
Leveling Up
The goal in Mafia Wars is to become Boss of your own mafia family in New York City. (I won’t confuse this introduction by talking about the titles in Cuba or Moscow…yet!) Everyone starts the game at the Street Thug tier with just 5 puny skill points to allocate as you see fit. You better get to work, thug!
To get to your next level, you’ll need experience points. You earn points by doing jobs in the tier open to you based on your level, at the cost of some energy. You can earn experience by fighting (or, once upon a time robbing) too, at the cost of stamina and energy points.
Your energy and stamina regenerate naturally over time. It helps to get a couple active players into those top mafia slots in your crew so you can always count on an energy pack – that can help you blow through those levels faster!
It’s my opinion that you shouldn’t rush your leveling too much without guidance, because you’ll find yourself getting pistol-whipped in fights at the next level because you don’t have family behind you or the money to maintain the good equipment. In Mafia Wars level up faster with a good strategy; it really can work if you know what you’re doing.
Building Your Crime Family
Mafia Wars is a hit at social media sites for a reason…you need lots of friends! The largest mafia you can use is 501 members, but you can continue to build your family after 501. You’ll see there is plenty of incentive to man up in Mafia Wars.
It’s not as hard as it sounds to grow a big family…6 million players on Facebook, remember? You’ll be able to invite existing friends to play Mafia Wars and join your family. You’ll be joining theirs, too! You can buy dummy family members with Godfather Points, too. You’ll be able to find lots of members all over the Internet, really. If you know where to look! (Start by reading the Mafia Wars Add article at this site.)
You’ll need family to pull off jobs and win fights. Whether you are attacking or defending, you WILL have Mafia Wars fights. Building a large family has lots of perks inside the game. While some players choose to keep their mafia small and emphasize strong, experienced character building, a whole lot of players are gunning for that 501 mafia. It will be your call once you begin what kind of family you want to build.
Earning Money
It’s easy to overlook money when you begin playing Mafia Wars. Lower level players can upkeep their tiny mafias easily. But you’ll quickly see how important mastering the Mafia Wars money objective is as you level up and upkeep costs soar! You’ll need money to maintain your fleet of armored cars and jet planes, your guns, and your armor. (Those bodyguards must really eat a lot!)
And you can’t do without these things: you need vehicles, weapons, and armor for every member of your mafia! So, pretty quickly you’ll want to hammer down the money basics of the game.
Wanna get a bankroll going?
You earn money from two primary sources: jobs and properties. (Yes, you get money from fights and robbing, too, but that’s hit or miss.) Jobs make you some small potatoes in the early job tiers, because the real reward of jobs is experience and (sometimes) loot. The real Mafia Wars money is in properties.
You’ll have your own Louie’s Deli and Mafia Mike’s when you begin. You’ll get a “take” from these properties and you can lose it in a fight, bank it, or buy more properties. Since the properties make you money, you’ll definitely want to be buying yourself some lots to build on real soon! You’ll be collecting that “take” before you know it. And you need it because being Mafioso with ambition is expensive.

Unless you are in a rush to kick butt and take names in Mafia Wars so you can walk the NYC streets that you OWN… then you don’t need a website, you need to…
Because Mafia Wars is the most fun when you are WINNING. If you try to reinvent the wheel, you’ll be hammering away at it while everyone else scoops up the goodies in Moscow!
