I don’t know if I lose the bet or not.
Just a few days ago I said that I thought Zynga wouldn’t get Mafia Wars Bangkok out till the end of January. But now they’ve released a Mafia Wars Bangkok BETA. They’ve hedged their bets and said they won’t roll out Mafia Wars Bangkok till all the bugs are ironed out. But technically, it’s “out.”

Don’t worry if you didn’t make the lucky duck list. You’ve still got a shot at getting in. Some lucky ducks also got extra passports to give to friends or fellow mafia. (Some didn’t.) Other players were offered the opportunity to buy into Mafia Wars Bangkok Beta, and if they did, they got 3 passports to give away.

That being said, don’t get taken by a truly criminal-minded Mafia Wars player. People are paying real cash and getting stiffed on the passports out there in gameland. Don’t be a victim.
Okay, here’s some of the skinny on Mafia Wars Bangkok:
First off, there is no level needed to unlock Bangkok. You can get in and your level doesn’t prevent you. Zynga has even scaled the energy input needed for players level 20-200, so they can do the jobs without the giant energy pool you needed to do Mafia Wars Moscow. (Players over 200 ante up a fixed amount of energy to do a given job.) This is a pretty exciting feature for newbies! A great chance to collect the killer new venue loots without being a level 100+.
Income is from businesses…a lot like Mafia Wars Cuba, actually. Three upgrade points: quality, quantity, space to store. Paying out every 3 hours. Sound familiar? Perhaps not the most brilliant programming innovation for Mafia Wars Bangkok, but it should be familiar to you if you went to Cuba already.
Looks like Zynga is going with the “storyline” job style, as in Mafia Wars Moscow. In Mafia Wars Bangkok Beta, the jobs unfold to you based on which job you chose and completed previously in order to tell a coherent story. Be sure to leave a choice point job unmastered so you can continue to flip between the factions.
You get to flip around between Chinese Triad and Japanese Yakuza in Mafia Wars Bangkok Beta. Some very exciting features promised related to the factions. A new stat called “reputation” will rise and fall based on what jobs you complete for which side.
Faction fighting isn’t in the Mafia Wars Bangkok Beta. Fighting will figure in to your reputation with each faction – pick a side and pick fights with the opposing faction to gain reputation (and lose reputation with the opposition!). Then switch sides and fight the other way.
You’ll want reputation, because you’ll need it in order to shop at the faction store. The Triad store (with better defensive gear) or the Yakuza store (better offensive gear) will only let you buy certain items when your reputation is high enough. You can “max out” your reputation with both factions if you handle it right. An ideal situation for shopping the stores.
Also, there is diamond level mastery in Mafia Wars Bangkok Beta. Yes, Zynga has added a fourth level of mastery on the jobs! They promise the best offensive or defensive equipment in Mafia Wars as mastery bonus on the Diamond level.
I’ve seen some collections coming down the pike: masks, lotus, chess set, herbs, and more. And I’ve seen four achievements so far: Dead Or Alive – earn Allied status with the Yakuza; Hard Boiled – earn Allied status with the Triad; Bangkok Dangerous – earn Allied status with the Yakuza and Triad at the same time; One Night In Bangkok- complete Episode 5A or 5B of Bangkok

Best luck in the new venue! Try to find a friend who got a spare passport, but don’t get taken by shady passport promises. If you can’t get into Beta, you can always work on Mafia Wars New York, Mafia Wars Cuba and Mafia Wars Moscow…you didn’t finish all masteries, grow a giant crew, max out your businesses already, did you?
