Let’s break down the three aspects of Mafia Wars fights – what causes those wins/losses?
Personal Stats
I’m bound to take some flak for this section, because a lot of players argue with me that the ONLY way to go in the early levels is to allocate all your skill points into energy. And even I advise investing in energy with your skill points when you are looking to speed level up with a focus on jobs.
But, as far as Mafia Wars fights go, it helps a whole lot to have a more balanced approach to skill point allocation. The fight algorithm is 10%-25% based on personal stats. If you lose a fight because you are “outclassed,” then your personal ATT/DEF numbers are not as strong as your opponents.

When you allocate nothing to defense for your characer, then whenever you get attacked by an equal-sized mafia with decent equipment, you’ll get whooped – losing health and money and goodies.
And while I’d never tell someone to dump a ton of points in health or stamina – they regenerate naturally through the game timer- an attack point here and there sure helps you win more if you are the aggressive fighter type. (Yeah, sure, tell me I’m an idiot for not putting all my points in energy…I’ll take the heat!)
Manpower
When you engage in Mafia Wars fights – attacked or attacker whatever the case may be – the fight is actually you and every member of your mafia and your equipment versus your opponent and their mafia and their equipment. It’s the first 501 people in your mafia against the first 501 people in your opponents mafia. If you are losing Mafia Wars fights because you are “outmanned,” then your mafia size is too small to beat your opponent.
There are some mathmatical factors and special items (damn those “critical hits” and “bodyguards” and Maniac Buttonmen, anyway) that sway an outcome, but often the sheer size of your mafia determines the winner of Mafia Wars fights. So make sure to build up your mafia family to balance your level, or you’ll get your butt kicked regular by gamers who focus on mafia size.
I’m not necessarily advocating a giant mafia for beginners, but a teeny tiny mafia is a giant bullseye painted on your back for the aspect of Mafia Wars fights.
Equipment
It’s your crew versus their crew in Mafia Wars fights. However, if you’re mafia has lame Mafia Wars weapons, vehicles, and armor, you’ll get “outgunned” and lose the fight. It’s just basic Mafia Wars fights smarts to outfit your first 501 mafia with the best equipment you can afford to upkeep. Each member of your mafia needs a vehicle, a weapon, and armor.
Remember, your equipment has attack and defense values, so it matters if you are the attacker or the attacked. When attacked, you will be using the strongest DEF weapons, armor and vehicles you own. When you attack, you’ll be using the strongest ATT weapons, armor, and vehicles you’ve got.
If you plan to focus on jobs rather than Mafia Wars fights to get the experience you need to level up, you can set out to collect the equipment that rocks the defense values to make yourself especially difficult to beat when attacked.
General Fight Tips
- It takes stamina and energy to attack.
- Mafia Wars fights yield experience to the winner of the fight.
- Even a massively outmanned, outgunned, and outclassed fighter wins 5-10% of the fights and gets the experience – “luck” is built in to the fight algorithm.
- Fightlist titles can be misleading - a gamer can change their title at will to any title they have earned. Don’t assume a title equals another gamer’s highest level, or you may find yourself up against – surprise! - a more experienced player.
- You can attack, or be attacked, as long as your health is above 20.
- If your health drops below 20, you’ve been iced.
- Health 0? You’ve been whacked.
- When you’ve been iced, you can log off so you don’t get laid up in the hospital and you live to fight another day! Or you can keep playing and focus on jobs while you’re regenerating and taking less damage from the fight list.
- You can still be attacked if your health is below 20. The attack button vanishes, but your attacker can click through to your profile directly. They will get an “unconscious” message, but can continue to damage you.
- Always log off when you are done playing a Mafia Wars session, or you may get attacked while you are offline and lose health and money at a higher rate, without even knowing you are being attacked.
- The most you can lose in a fight is $100,000. In NYC, not so bad. In Cuba and Moscow, a disaster
- You can be attacked even when you are logged off, but you won’t lose as money or take much health damage.
- Damage is not the reason you lose a fight, but a result of the fight. It’s calculated after the fight is over.
- If you are taking big money losses due to Mafia Wars fights, then review the Mafia Wars Money article – it may be better to bank your take (and pay the 10% fee) to keep from being the newbie who gets his/her money repeatedly stripped off them in the fights!
- Are you a Mafia Wars whipping boy/girl? If you’re being targeted by a higher level player, the best defense is to ADD your attacker to your mafia!
- Looking for easy experience points? Attack an inactive player, or better yet, a spammer. (Get Spockholm’s SpammerHunt bookmarklet!) You may not get much money in these type of fights, but you’ll get between 1 and 6 experience points anyway.
