If you focus on using energy for jobs, why is building your mafia family important?
My Mafia Wars Hints #1 – As you level up, your goal should be to match the number of members in your family to your level. Level 4? Get three others to join your mafia. Level 50? You want 50 members total.

It’s wise to focus on steady crew growth so you don’t accidentally break Facebook or Zynga rules about adding too many friends or crew in your session. The matching your level to your number of mafia is a rule of thumb, not an unbreakable law.
My Mafia Wars Hints #2 – Building your crew will help shore up your unbalanced stats, so that when you do get attacked you won’t get smacked down all the time. You won’t be ‘outmanned’ so much with a decent sized crew!

It’s nice to have active players in those spots, so you can be sure that you’ll get a pack as often as possible. My Mafia Wars Hints #4 – Use your energy packs to get those consumables in big batches, not to level up. The best use for an energy pack is to gather consumables (untraceable cell phones, computer set ups, blackmail photos, marked cards, etc.) rather than to burn a pack in regular mafia work.
My Mafia Wars Hints #5 – Focus on the jobs that drain the most energy and yield you the most experience when you first log on. That way you can continue working the smaller energy demand jobs as your energy refills naturally in the game timer. This will give you the longest possible sessions while your energy pool is still kind of small.
My Mafia Wars Hints #6 – Don’t waste your energy packs! If you are close to leveling up, you don’t want to use an energy pack since you will get a free energy bar refill when you level. Although it looks like Zynga may have recently changed the way that an energy pack refill spills over into the next level, try to get to that next level without the pack.
The most efficient way to use the pack is to drive your energy down as low as possible early to midway through a given level. Then when you use the pack, you’ll get the maximum amount of energy you can get. It’s something like 120% of your energy bar. Anyway, using the pack while you’ve got 50% of your energy in the bar is just wasteful.
My Mafia Wars Hints #7 – Don’t use an active player for whipping boy, no matter how easy the win is. Spread the beatings around the fightlist a little. I mean, let’s talk about the practice of using your Mafia Wars energy to fight a “whipping boy” to gain experience… Is it really smart?
I know fights and robbing yield good experience points. And you need to dump your stamina to get off the fightlist so you can focus on jobs, so you’ll want to use the fightlist for that. But you’ll get lots of Mafia Wars hints elsewhere about how keen it is to find a weaker player and repeatedly attack them.
I’ve got three problems with this:
- It results in less game mastery skills by the attacker
- It shows a laziness of gameplay from the attacker
- It may make the attacked gamer quit Mafia Wars and that’s one less person to add to your mafia!
If that’s not enough, consider the potential fallout from using the “whipping boy” approach to energy/experience leveling. You might pick a fight with the wrong player and bring down a world of hurt on yourself when he calls in reinforcements. With all your points dropped into energy till at least level 101, you’re at a disadvantage in an ongoing series of fights against someone who spreads their skill points around in the ATT/DEF categories.
Plus, some players take it personally when you attack them out of the blue (even though this is an aspect of the game…hello! MAFIA Wars). Repeatedly attacking the same player may get you the experience points you need, but if they respond by:
- Reporting you for game abuse – You may get booted, or warned by Facebook, which shows up on your game profile
- Putting you on the hitlist all the time
- Sending their stronger mafia members to use you as their whipping boy
- Hunting you down personally through your Facebook account
..um, that kind of stuff would be bad, right?

My Mafia Wars Hints #8 – This one is easy on your conscience: If you like to use fights to gain experience points, I recommend you find an inactive player to target. You won’t get money from those fights, but you won’t end up on the hitlist either. And if you can’t easily find an inactive player, find yourself a known spammer (Spockholm’s SpammerHunt) who deserves a good butt kickin’.
