As far as Mafia Wars property basics go, when you are a newbie to the game, focus on buying Mafia Mike’s and undeveloped lots in increments of 10. Lots are cheapest that way, so save up by banking your money until you have enough.
By the way, lots can’t be robbed and they make you money even without buildings on them. Once you’ve got those 10 lots in your Mafia Wars property portfolio, then build on them. Build your buildings in groups of ten, too. It’s cheapest that way. Save up till you have enough to do it, rather than buying them one at a time.
Note that specific types of lots get specific types of buildings – don’t try to build a rent house on the beachfront, right? That would be a Mafia Wars property no-no.

My advice is to build Mafia Wars property that can’t be robbed, or isn’t worth robbing when your mafia is a fledgling. Mafia Mike’s and lots are ideal. Rent houses are good. Most robbers aren’t interested in penny ante stuff like convenience stores, either.
Casinos and hotels draw robbers like flies on…honey. 
Once you’ve built up your 10 lots, buy more lots. Always in groups of ten.
What you don’t want to do is bank your money permanently. (You may not want to bank your money at all…the 10% fee is pretty steep.) Banked money is safe from loss in fights, but it doesn’t earn you anything to offset your upkeep.
Lots and Mafia Mike’s are the Mafia Wars property types that earn you truly safe income. So use the bank to save up enough to buy lots and Mafia Mike’s, but don’t just let your money sit in there. Put it to use.
Once you’ve got a more sizable mafia (and you’re past level 15), you can build Mafia Wars property that requires protection from robbing if you like. For now, build the un-robbable property portfolio by always getting more Mafia Mike’s whenever you can. You’ll need to grow your family to buy those, but they earn the best take for the price and (this is worth repeating, because some people really DON’T know!) they can’t be robbed.
That should get you going on Mafia Wars property. You gotta get into the black to upkeep yourself and your family. And property is your ticket to cash flow!
