What stinks about this topic is that you probably chose your Mafia Wars character type when you didn’t know anything about the game or Mafia Wars strategy for leveling. And, as of the date I’m writing this, you cannot change your Mafia Wars character type. Which is a bummer, because when Mafia Wars was first released, you could buy a character type change with Godfather points, but not anymore.
Zynga really should make this change back to the old system, because a lot of people would shell out Godfather reward points to change their initial choice, which they made in ignorance of Mafia Wars strategy!
Leveling Strategy and Black Book Methods
Anyway, you are what you are as far as character type! The three Mafia Wars character types are:
Mogul
Maniac
Fearless
Each type has one major perk, one specialized top mafia slot, and one special bonus ability. Let’s go over them before we talk Mafia Wars strategy for leveling.
Character: Mogul
- Major perk: Earns hourly take every 54 minutes instead of every 60.
- Top Mafia slot: Bagman
- Special ability: If promoted to Bagman in someone else’s mafia, you sometimes earn 2x money on jobs.
Maniac
- Major perk: Energy regenerates at an accelerated rate of 1 per 3 minutes, instead of 1 per 5.
- Top Mafia Slot: Button Man
- Special Ability: As someone else’s Button Man, you have the chance to win any fight you initiate regardless of stats.
Fearless
- Major perk: Health regenerates at an accelerated rate of 1 per 2 minutes, instead of 1 per 3.
- Top Mafia Slot: Wheelman
- Special Ability: As Wheelman in someone else’s crew, you will sometimes be able to do jobs and it will cost you zero energy.
The consensus is that Mogul isn’t an especially helpful Mafia Wars character type to be when you are looking at Mafia Wars strategy for speed leveling through jobs. Of course, in the first 30 levels or so, it’s nice to get those additional 2 hours and 24 minutes of “take” per day as Mogul. The problem is that most players that get past those lower levels don’t have much trouble raking in the Mafia Wars money, so the advantage becomes meaningless pretty early on.
The real debate is over whether it’s better to be a Maniac or Fearless.

Maniac is the best Mafia Wars character because energy is the most important stat if you want to level fast. Extra energy never goes out of style in this game. While the Maniac special ability isn’t very meaningful in the upper levels (where you’ll only pick fights you can win anyway), the energy boost never goes out of style. If you want to level fast, picking Maniac is the best Mafia Wars strategy.
Versus
Team Fearless-is-Best-Character for Mafia Wars strategy :
Fearless is the best Mafia Wars character because, while health seems like a non-issue, that special ability is pretty huge. If you can get someone else to promote you into Wheelman for even a couple days, you can level up like mad because between 5% of the jobs you do will not cost you any energy. In the upper job tiers that’s a pretty huge advantage. Also, the health regeneration is a bit more valuable in Cuba, where a lot of players take a beating on the fightlist and have to fly back to NYC to afford a hospital stay!
Both arguments are pretty persuasive. I’m sure you see the common thread that ties them together. The key to Mafia Wars strategy is maximizing your energy. Whether you regenerate energy through the game timer at a faster rate or get to do 5% of the jobs without using your precious energy, the name of the game is energy. Unfortunately, you can’t change your Mafia Wars character and you’ve got to stay whatever character you picked on day one. You would have to deactivate your Mafia Wars application for 60 days and then reload it to start over all the way on your Facebook profile.
